SMALLHOLDER PROGRAMME
Our smallholder programme - An Alliances for Peace.
The farmers in Northern Colombia have seen much hardship and have had to face many challenges in creating livelihoods for themselves and their families. Many left the region to escape from conflict and keep their families safe. In 1999 DAABON piloted a government initiative – Alliances for Peace – a smallholder programme aimed at creating opportunities for those families returning to the region, and those who had remained.
Today, 530 families are growing cocoa and oil palm in one of these Alliances, through which farmers receive favourable credit terms and technical support, which allow long-term sustainable agricultural practices. Through our Fairtrade and RSPO programmes, we monitor and ensure that the farmers and their families enjoy vastly improved livelihoods.
